CALTERA should be applied to a perfectly prepared surface. The base must be solid, dry, and free from efflorescence, dust, dirt, oil, and grease. Previously painted surfaces must be cleaned of any flaking material and sanded. Areas affected by mold or moss should be mechanically treated and primed with BiozidGrund D-07 (TM ELF) or other suitable products.
Apply QUARTZ PRIMER or QUARTZ PRIMER Grosso to the prepared surface. Before application, the decorative material can be tinted using a pigment or by computer color mixing and must be mixed thoroughly. Up to 10% water may be added depending on the surface and application technique.
The first layer is applied using a stainless steel trowel or spatula, forming the base design of the future finish. Light build-ups are acceptable to create a more pronounced texture.
After complete drying (approximately 6–12 hours), apply a second layer, varying the direction of strokes. In some techniques, sanding with sandpaper is permitted to refine the surface texture.
On the second layer, the stippling technique may be used with a masonry brush or stainless steel trowel. After 15–20 minutes, the surface can be polished using multi-directional strokes. Alternative creative techniques are also encouraged — the material offers great potential for experimentation and artistic freedom.
To enhance the texture depth and protect the surface, it is recommended to apply DECOR WAX or SAVONITE Marseille soap. The wax should be applied in a thin layer using a metal trowel, brush, or roller, changing stroke directions to highlight the structure of the finish.
When applied in multiple layers (e.g., with a brush or roller), visual color variation may occur — such as light clouding or blurred transitions. This effect is due to varying degrees of surface compression depending on tool pressure and motion, and it is considered a natural feature of the material that enhances its decorative character and natural depth.
For a more uniform appearance, it is recommended to use specific tools such as a plastic trowel or a fine, flexible steel spatula, while avoiding strong compression and polishing techniques.
If your goal is a perfectly smooth finish, we recommend considering other materials from the ELF DECOR range — such as Toscana or Grotto — which offer similar textures but are better suited for refined and delicate finishes.
